For some time I have been adding to this blog, patients negative experiences in our local hospitals that have been posted at the website patient opinion. There are many good examples of good feedback where patients have praised the standard of care they have received.
There are also some negative comments about rudeness of consultants, long waits for treatment or inadequate or negligent treatment. However complaints about the standard of nursing and in particular the treatment of patients with dementia are a recurring theme. Below are some extracts.
“The part which was most distressing was the way they handled a female patient with dementia, she was so distressed and crying and confused, and really very, very, very rarely did anyone come and sit or explain to her what was happening and where she was.”
“the whole time they seemed rude, aggressive and just as though they wished there were no patients”
“However, Intensive Care is no place for a person who suffers with dementia. Medication pills were left with the patient, who had no idea why she was in hospital, let alone what she was supposed to do with the pills given to her.”
“Also, the food was left for the patient, but with no-one to feed her, the food was left untouched and then taken away by the staff, who did not give any thought to why the patient was not eating ANYTHING. This only went in when I went in to feed the patient.”
“The woman in the next bed to me appeared very elderly, was immobile and possibly suffering from dementia. The staff openly told me that she was a ‘regular’ and were fed up with her calling constantly and imitated her in a mocking voice. At one stage two staff pulled the curtains around this woman and when she called out they mouthed and gesticulated for her to ’shut up’.”

I can tell that this is not the first time at all that you write about this topic. Why have you decided to touch it again?

I have covered this topic again as I am horrified at the way elderly people are treated by some staff in hospitals.
