Mr Simpson said: “It is entirely understandable that the public should be appalled at the gross, tasteless and offensive behaviour of the two BBC presenters in respect of broadcasted comments on the Radio 2 programme. Attention so far has focused on the responsibilities of the BBC in allowing this to be broadcast two days after it was recorded.
The real issue, however, is in the nature of the abusive and offensive comments made by the presenters and left on Andrew Sachs’ answer phone.
In any other walk of life, an employee found responsible for making such comments as part of their work would be subject to instant dismissal. There would be no defence against the charge of gross professional misconduct. The employment contract would be immediately terminated.
The key question is why the BBC has not done precisely this with Mssrs Ross and Brand.”
