An interesting article in Nottingham Evening Post today.

“A UNIVERSITY of Nottingham building has been labelled the second worst new architectural design in Britain.

The Amenities Building by Make architects at the Jubilee Campus was described as “appalling” by judges in the Carbuncle Cup.

The £10.5m ferry terminal at Liverpool’s Pier Head won the award from Building Design magazine, but judge Ellis Woodman said Nottingham was a “very close second”.

He said: ‘Someone said to me the other day, ‘it’s very rare that you can look at a photo of a building which makes the car park look good’. What I found particularly awful is it’s obsessed with making crazy forms.'”

I like it. Distinctive, colourful, unusual and, most of all, fun.

I don’t know who judges the Carbuncle Cup but I bet they’re friends of Prince Charles

Sorry but I can’t agree with you Alan-a-dale.It’s just far too garish and brash , especially compared to some of the other buildings on Jubilee. They’ve designed it to stand out which is understandable but it just looks quite obnoxious. It wouldn’t be so bad if they did it in shades of grey though or a more darker colour like the Experian building which uses shades of dark blue.

Have to disagree with you francois, I really like the way it looks; Garish? Somewhat, but I don’t think it;s brash or obnoxious – I think it’s pretty cool.

Who says buildings have to conform to the design of all the others on Jubilee campus? I think it’s a bit of out-of-the-box thinking that a university should be proud to adopt – certainly stands out more than most university buildings that I know! 🙂

It’s a real eye-ache, IMO. Jubilee campus is a nice place, lots of water and birds and greenery, and even a couple of interesting buildings such as the inverted pyramid of the Djanogly Building, but this garish lump is well out of place. Almost as bad as the ‘submarine’ and the egg whisk. A nice location spoilt by crap architecture.
